Types of funding:

Scholarships

Scholarships are financial awards designed to recognise and support students for their academic excellence or to simply provide financial assistance throughout their studies.

The entry requirements and value of a scholarship varies for each awarding organisation, with scholarships also being competitive funds, meaning you need to work hard on your application to stand out among other applicants.

Grants

Grants provide targeted financial assistance to students facing particular circumstances or challenges. These student funds are designed to support a wide range of needs, including but not limited to, grants for disabilities, parents, NHS staff and social workers.

Student grants are usually offered by the government, charities or trusts and never need to be repaid.

Bursaries

Bursaries are additional funds for students that are based on individual financial need rather than competitive criteria. These are usually granted by universities and colleges on top of any student loan you receive.

Importantly, bursaries are gifts that do not have to be repaid. The value of a bursary varies depending on your personal financial situation and the institution, but they all share the common goal of making education more accessible.

Hardship funds

Hardship funds are emergency funds that universities can give to students who are in extreme financial difficulty. To ensure that the funds reach those most in need, there is strict eligibility criteria.

The amount awarded will vary depending on your personal circumstances and the university’s assessment of your needs. Hardship funds never have to be repaid.
