Over the past 3 weeks, we’ve been hearing from students across the UK about how finance can affect your wellbeing. More than 1,500 of you responded to us - sharing your thoughts, feelings, and experiences.

We’re working through your responses to share your views with universities, colleges, and the wider world.

But we’re concerned.

I’m Racheal, Blackbullion’s Head of Strategy. My job is to find out what’s happening in the world of students so we can create better tools for you.

I’m also a Mental Health First Aider. When someone tells me life is so challenging that they feel hopeless, I feel it’s important to act on this information.

Some questions in our wellbeing survey resulted in responses that have worried us.

  • 71% of the students we asked felt hopeless about their situation

  • 82% of those asked said they often felt anxious.

  • Some of you shared comments that used words like “stressed”, “depression”, and “suicide”.

It’s tough to hear that you’re struggling so much. And as we head towards Christmas, I know it often gets harder during the festive season.

I don’t know the names or contact details of the people who answered the survey. I do know the sample was meant to represent students in the UK. So, I might be speaking to you, and I hope you feel the care I offer. Above all else, everyone at Blackbullion is committed to supporting our students. Our mission is about setting you up for life - to help you fulfil your potential.

As a Mental Health First Aider, I can signpost you to organisations that can support you. It is a way of pointing you toward help, where hope might be found.

  1. Consider reaching out to your university’s student support team. There may be support funds you can access. There will be a friendly ear ready to listen.

  2. Independent services like Citizens Advice can advise on tackling issues like debt, rent arrears, or speaking with creditors.

  3. Organisations like Mind offer help and advice on navigating difficult times. There have been times when I have been grateful for the wisdom they offer.

  4. If you need to speak with someone urgently, Samaritans are always at the end of the phone on 116 123.

We know that something needs to be done. That’s why we’re writing a report with the information that you’ve shared. Our report will be shared with universities, the media, and the government. They will hear about this, too.

Take care of yourselves. Know that we are on your side, and no one is alone in making this better.
