How to write an internship application letter

1. Research the company and role

Before you start writing, thoroughly research the company and the specific internship role you’re applying for. 

It’s important to understand the company’s mission, values and the skills they’re looking for in an intern. You may not have all the exact qualifications, but try to speak to what you can and use examples of your experience where applicable.

1. Tailor your application - Customise your application letter and CV for each internship to highlight the most relevant skills and experiences - and to show that you’ve done your research! 

2. Incorporate key terms from the job advert - Large companies often use automated systems to pre-select applications that scan for specific keywords. Even if a person reviews each letter, they tend to quickly scan for those that catch their interest and fulfil their criteria

3. Proofread - Ensure your application is free of spelling and grammatical errors. A well-polished letter reflects your attention to detail and professionalism

But some companies may take longer - especially during peak application periods. If you haven’t gotten a response after a few weeks, you could send a polite follow-up email to inquire about the status of your application.
